Small Ergonomic Changes Make BIG Impacts

Studies show ergonomic interventions save $4 for every dollar spent on prevention. It also reduce workman’s comp insurance claims by an average of $16,500.

How can I use ergonomics to improve the workplace?

Safety

Work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s) account for 33% of all workers injury and illness cases reported to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On average an injured employee takes 47 days off of work to tend to their injuries. These injuries can manifest themselves as numbing, tingling, dull or sharp painful sensations while engaging in work task. They affect an employees level of productivity, workplace happiness and cost a company thousands in worker’s compensation and direct health care cost.

Ergonomics can help identify risk factors which can cause injury. When these injuries are caught early they can be corrected or better yet prevented.

What is a musculoskeletal disorder?

Examples of musculoskeletal disorders include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Tendinitis

  • Rotator cuff injuries

  • Epicondylitis

  • Trigger finger

  • Muscle strains and low back injuries

Equipment

Do you know what your employees are spending their office equipment stipend on?

Buying ergonomic equipment can be tricky. People tend to choose equipment based off reviews however not all equipment works the same for everyone. It’s important to know each items specifications and if they fit the individuals and also the proper use of each item. For example, did you know studies show standing for over 30 minutes can increase the workload placed on the spine? It’s not good for you!

ErgoTherapy wants to help you teach employees about how their bodies and work habits interact with equipment they feel they might need. It’s not uncommon for people to realize what they thought they needed was actually a bad idea to begin with.

Workspace

Do you know what kind of workspace your employees work in?

Whether it’s remote work or your own office space it’s hard to know how your employee is feeling through the day unless you ask them. What people describe as minor discomfort, which stem from micro injuries, can over time turn into an actual injury. Injuries not only prevent employees from working on a day to day basis but can lead to long term physical disease. Early intervention (such as when discomfort begins or during the onboarding process) and education from the get go can help educate employees on what their bodies should look like giving them the power to make adjustments as needed through the day.

Workplace Happiness

We all know that when employees are happy at their jobs they arrive to work motivated and engaged. In addition, studies are finally showing fatigue can cause decreased productivity and increase absentee days. ErgoTherapy can help identify discomforts related to workplace set up and workplace habits. We can help eliminate discomfort by making adjustments but also teaching employees how to incorporate wellness methods there at their desk, where it matters most.
